  • This September and October is being celebrated by Not Ok. A punk band originating in New Zealand but we now get to claim them as our own. Just finishing up a tour with Horace Pinker (USA) they are ready to step up to claim their rightful position as Renegades first punk band to hold the cover position. We love these guys and wish for you to all take them in and listen to everything they have to say whether it is in their lyrics, over a beer at the pub or in their very own words published within our pages. For more information on Not Ok check out their myspace http://www.myspace.com/notokband (more…)

We met our cover band for our 4th edition when enjoying the splendors that the Tamworth Country Music Festival had to offer earlier this year. Like many other bands before them they were braving the sweltering heat to entertain the crowds on Peel Street with 4 other bands all from Melbourne under the collective name of the Gut Rot Tour (more…)

  • I hate the Australian Customs people. It is because of their horrible mistakes and poor judgment that our fourth edition was late hitting news agencies and we couldn’t send it out to you guys on time. To make up for it and because we are in a good mood today I’m saying for the remainder of this month ALL our magazines including our brand new one (which we only picked up this morning and we had to wear horrible hi-vis gear which wasn’t attractive at all) will be only $5 plus postage.

Buy it. Read it. Buy one for ya mum – make her read it. (more…)

  • and now we are back.

For those of you who follow us on Facebook and Twitter or can hear our screams you will know that issue # 4 of Renegades Empire Magazine was sent to the printers 2 weeks ago. Then we took a break. Now we are back and scouting for stuff for Issue # 5.

We’ve uploaded some photos of Chopdogs Ska Weekender held in Sydney at Hermanns Bar on the 5th of June to our Flicker for your veiwing pleasure and i’m STILL uploading videos to YOUTUBE of the SKA bands that graced the stage to entertain. (it takes so dang long)

Now I’m back to work and looking for bands. If you want in the magazine email us and let us know about your band. Cover spot is still up for grabs and I’m open to all suggestions.

Keep your ears to the ground. Renegades Empire is going to be giving you alot more in the next couple of weeks.

    Well that happened..

  • - The Snowdroppers at The Gum Ball. Have you ticked them off your to do list yet?  http://www.snowdroppers.com/shows

So this weekend we went the The Gum Ball. A music festival near Maitland in NSW. What can I say really. It rained, it was wet and gross and my hair was frizzy but the food was hot the drinks were cold and the bands rocked my soul.

The day before The Gum Ball we procrastinated from driving and went and bought a sick camera so now we have some great photos to publish in the next edition of Renegades Empire Magazine. So keep an eye out for that. We got to see the Brothers Grim and The Blue Murders again and they made us fall in love again. Those boys are good at that. And we also got the experience The Snowdroppers once again. Johnny Wishbone playing that banjo what else is there really to say. I love a good banjo….

We got the chance to discover some new bands as well which you can read about soon in #4 of Renegades Empire Magazine.

Now that i’m home and dry and drained from the Renegades business meeting we just had i’m off to bed so I can get up tomorrow morning and finish off #4 and get to the printers on time so you can all enjoy a good read. Your going to love the next issue it’ll scare your socks off.

Get to a gig. Fall in love with a new band. Tell us about it.

I can’t count the amount of times i’ve been called a man since starting this magazine without my brain getting bored of all the numbers.

Seriously though. I’m no feminist, I’m happy to be in the kitchen doing the dishes and cooking dinner but on the side of my womanly duties I own a magazine. When emailing people or talking on Facebook people always refer to me as a man. ‘Thanks man’ ‘Cheers bro’ Whats this magazine you fellas have put together?’ Now I must write like a man cos as soon as I get on the phone to someone or meet them in person they are quite suprised that i have boobs and not balls. Most of them don’t say anything out of being polite but I can tell from the stutter in their voices and the fact they want to know if I’m sure that I’m me.

Who knows. Maybe I do write a bit manly.

When complaining about this to some guy friends last night they gave me the answer – ‘It’s a guys world and we women just live in it’.

So maybe thats myanswer. The friends I keep force me to man up and accept the fact that they all need a good kick in the head.

    I’m not a man. I have a girl name.

By the way we are working on issue # 4 at the moment so if you have any thing cool you want to see in the mag make sure you let us know.

    Where you will be?

  • Malcolm McLaren
    22 January 1946 – 8 April 2010

Who could ever forget the gleaming black gimp mask staring at you with the disturbing, whispering voice announcing, “My name is Malcolm McLaren”. The Greatest Rock and Roll Swindle was never about McLaren. He wasn’t the story, wasn’t even the main player, but McLaren decided otherwise.

With McLaren, it was all about the self promotion.

    It was all about Malcolm.

He spent his life, finding and presenting something new and exciting, but make no mistake, it may have been about the art to an extent, but primarily, it was about the money. Malcolm McLaren was an importer of fine product from the US to the UK and beyond, starting with clothing, then bondage equipment and then broader fashion that included Punk and hip hop. It all started for McLaren, who was an artist, then he opened a clothing store in London in the early 70’s with his then wife, designer, Vivienne Westwood.

  • …or maybe thats just the gypsies.

After spending 4 days in Melbourne with a gig every night then returning to Sydney to see Lyle Lovett one night and Gogol Bordello the next, we wake up early Thursday morning, having missed our printing deadline (31st) and we had a long 800km drive to Lightining Ridge for the Goat Races over the Easter weekend. Right now we’re in a tour bus, driving home, we’ve just hit send on the artwork for the 3rd edition of Renegades Empire Magazine, 4 days late and i’m really keen to see another gig. Living the dream.

With all the love and hate mail coming in each day we’ve decided it’s time to make a few changes with our magazine. We’ve got a few new writers, alot more articles and a whole new concept in store for the future so if you would like any input in the stuff you read about in Renegades Empire Magazine, now is the time to tell us. Voice your opinion on how you want the music of Australia to be represented and tell us about any bands you think should be covered.

Now while your all clinging tightly to copies of Issue 1 & 2 and waiting intensely for the release of Issue 3 – GO TO SOME GIGS, BUY SOME CD’S, SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC.

We’ve also got some exciting oppourtunities coming up for you to be a part of Renegades Empire Magazine and some very cool competitions so keep your eyes peeled here and on our Facebook http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=100000393965212 for more details.

    Thats all really..

  • I’m tired and in need of a chiropractor after sleeping upright in a car outside the Ettamogah Pub in the wee hours of Monday morning but I feel the need to publicly thank Melbourne City and it’s people for showing us a great weekend.

We did lots of shopping and went to many gigs and it was fun meeting the punks of old Melbourne town.

    Some highlights:

    > Punk-A-Billy 10 at the Barleycorn Hotel. Massive night of punk mayham where the highlight was The Australian Kingswood Factory rocking up the stage.
    > Tour around Fitzroy from those Brothers Grim
    > The Espy – what a great venue
    > GPS getting us lost only to discover more Melbourne delights
    > Almost hitting many bike riders (SORRY), Almost getting hit by a tram and learning the honking of the horn wasn’t at our bad driving but just a friendly request to hurry up

We were lucky enough to stay longer on Sunday night to see Brothers Grim and The Blue Murders perform their last Juke Joint Show at the Standard Hotel. And might i say these boys know how to entertain. If you are yet to get a taste of these lads make sure you do and be sure to check them out in the current issue of Renegades Empire Magazine as well as many more to come.

Until next time Melbourne keep rocking it out like you always do.

Whats coming up this week for us? GOGOL BORDELLO with support from local boys THE RUMJACKS would love to see you all there!
